Welcome to Brussels!
Air pollution is not only a problem in the UK, but a huge problem across Europe. Every year 400,000 people die prematurely because of poor air quality. The European Parliament has the power to change this, if they act now.
Our friends at the European Environmental Bureau made the video above to show MEPs how bad the air pollution is where they work – around the EU Parliament, in Brussels.
The video also asks the MEPs to take action by improving air quality laws at EU level. In the coming months, MEPs will be writing and voting on different laws, which could significantly improve our air quality. At the moment, however, the MEPs are being unambitious – some of the pollution limits they’re including in new legislation are actually HIGHER than current laws allow. This won’t help anyone.
With EEB, and campaigners across Europe, we’ll be pushing our MEPs to implement strong air quality targets that will ensure our health isn’t damaged by the air we breathe.
